Most of digitizing is not drawing. The artwork already exists. A file is a set of instructions for a needle going through cloth at speed. If you've never watched that happen, you're guessing. Spend time at a machine, even someone else's. Watch where thread breaks. Watch how a cap moves in the frame compared to a flat panel. Watch what happens when the density is too high and the fabric starts to draw in.

Before you jump into the software, spend a little time on how embroidery actually works: how stitches form, what stabilizers do, and how fabric type affects the result. This foundation helps you make designs that sew cleanly on any machine.
Your software is your main tool, so get comfortable with it. Start simple: importing artwork, digitizing text, creating shapes and outlines, applying stitch types (satin, fill, running), and adjusting density, underlay and pull compensation. Don't rush this. The better you know your tools, the faster you'll grow.
Start with small logos, monograms or text. Focus on clean, balanced stitches rather than complicated patterns. Every time you digitize, test it on your machine and note what worked and what didn't.

It depends on how much you practice. A few hours a week and you can get comfortable in three to six months. A structured course or consistent tutorials will get you there faster.
To be more specific about it: the basics, meaning clean text and a simple logo, come quickly. Most of my students are digitizing that much inside a week. Being reliable across fabrics, sizes and awkward client artwork is the part that takes months, because it's built out of problems you have to actually meet.
